Nokian has announced that the WR-G2 is being replaced with the WRA3 and WRD3 in the runflat sizes only. The WR-G2 is still the current model for non-runflat passenger and SUV tires.

The A3 and D3 have very different tread designs and are intended for different applications.

It's that time of year again. The snow is starting to melt, and it's beginning to feel a little bit more like summer with every passing day.
However, this year i find myself looking forward to the warmer weather more than usual. I am part of a very small group of people who get excited about installing their summer tires, but if you drove on Vredestein's Ultrac Sessanta tires you would understand why.
Last June i finally made the switch. I decided to throw out my old and worn out Nexen N3000 tires and go with something a little more...European. I wasn't very pleased with the tread life of the Nexen's (roughly 20,000 miles), so needless to say i was a little weary of spending twice the amount on a very similar product.

As soon as i left the parking lot with my newly installed tires, i knew that the money was well spent. I instantly felt a smoother, quieter ride and better grip than i had imagined possible.

I took the tires on a very aggressive test drive, and no matter what Dukes of Hazard style maneuvers i attempted, the tires simply would not lose traction. I had no idea such traction was possible in a powerful rear-wheel drive vehicle.

So i know what you're thinking. The tires are great on dry roads, that's to be expected. How about wet weather performance? Even better.

These tires grip more in the rain than any other tire i have ever driven on. The Sessantas cut through puddles of rain like a hot knife through butter. This tire allows you to drive in the rain without altering any of your driving habits (for better or worse). I was unable to plant even the tiniest seed of doubt in my mind about these tires even after corning in the rain at extremely high speeds.

Quite frankly i have been incredibly impressed by these tires.

In January, American Racing debuted 53 new styles for their 8 wheel lines for 2012. New models will be available in the XD Series line, Motegi Racing Line, American Racing, American Racing Custom Shop, KMC line, Lorenzo Line, Moto Metal Line, and the Helo Line.

Among the new styles is the legendary Torq Thrust II wheel. It is being transformed with a brilliant Chrome (PVD) finish.

This timeless wheel has been produced for many years in a polished aluminum finish, and will soon be available in a PVD finish. (PVD), which stands for Physical Vapor Deposition, is an environmentally friendly vacuum coating process that provides brilliant and durable finishes that are nearly identical to the appearance of Chrome, at a much cheaper price. Since the Hakkapeliitta's debut in 1936, the tire has been the pioneer of winter driving. A series of winter tire tests were conducted in multiple Scandinavian countries in the fall of 2011. The Hakkapeliitta family scored in the top three of every test conducted.

"The non-studded winter tire Nokian Hakkapeliitta R won the Tuulilasi (12/2011) test. "Nokian is at its strongest on ice and in snow. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R gained reputation inRussia, too, where it won a test by Za Rulem (18/2011). "On a snowy road, the directional stability of these tires is best, the tire reacts fast and predictably. During bends they behave best, they distinguish themselves from other tires with precise reaction and stable driving", writes Za Rulem. There were six 175/65 R14 sized tires tested."

Comparing Stopping Distances Of Tires In Snow

Here in New England, it’s almost like the snow hasn’t stopped falling since we ran a truck tire testing updatelast month. The abundance of snow this year made it possible to evaluate the snow traction capabilities of our truck tires at our Connecticut test facility, avoiding a trip to northern Vermont. (See from last winter: "Behind the scenes: Consumer Reports snow-traction tire testing in Vermont.") We run our standard snow traction acceleration test to evaluate how tires perform in the white stuff, measuring the distance traveled from 5 to 20 mph. The shorter the distance, the better the tire grip.

And some readers had some questions about the tests we run, specifically how this grip might apply to stopping on snow. So we ran some back-to-back tests on randomly selected winter, all-season, and all-terrain tires. The chart below depicts ABS stopping distances from 20 to 0 mph and accelerating distances traveling 5 to 20 mph over hard-packed snow, which mimics a well-traveled snow-covered road. (Also read: "Staying safe on snow- and ice-covered roads.")

What we found was that our test data supports our subjective observations: A winter tire can provide secure grip to accelerate and stop on snow. And winter tires work better than an all-season and all-terrain tire we tested for comparison. Many people make a winter tire purchase solely on the idea of avoiding getting stuck in the snow. And while that has its merits, we think it’s more important to value tire grip for stopping, possibly helping you to avoid a collision. Here, our winter tire stopped at 13 and 16 feet shorter than the all-season and all-terrain tires, respectively—and that was from a relatively slow 20 mph.

Bottom line: If you need to be on the road in wintry weather, consider a winter tire for the best grip to start and stop. That’s especially important to drivers of all-wheel-drive cars and trucks who think they don’t need them. In truth, they may have the get-up-and-go traction to battle winter weather, but they cannot stop any better than a car without all-wheel drive. Only winter tires and your good senses will help that.

Colchester, Vermont, August 1, 2011: A new breed of sports car that harnesses the fuel efficiency of an electric car and the power and speed of a traditional sports car will hit the road at the first ever international e rally for electric vehicles tomorrow. The car, called Electric Race About (ERA) will compete at the e-miglia rally 2011, a four-day clean street rally that winds drivers through four countries and almost 500 miles of Alpine mountain roads of central Europe. ERA is a joint project of Nokian Tyres and Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Finland. While it consumes only 14.5 kWh over 62 miles (equal to .42 gallons of fuel) and emits no carbon monoxide, it goes from 1 to 60 mph in just six seconds and tops out at 136 mph. “The goal of the ERA prototype project is to demonstrate that an electric vehicle is a viable solution
today and that electric vehicles can be very efficient, fast and practical at the same time,” Sami Ruotsalainen, team leader and chief engineer of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences explains. “Our students have a tremendous learning opportunity at working with state-of-art technology and demonstrating its capability to public. At e-miglia we want to show that our e-car can drive in the first row even at the toughest rally.” The car features electric motor technology with 330 kW short-time and 200 kW continuous, a pure
electric power system with four inboard mount motors, the latest Lithium-Titanate battery pack, and Nokian Tyres Z G2 high-speed eco tires.

The rolling resistance of tires may differ greatly. A nearly 40% difference in rolling resistance transforms into an approximately 6% difference in fuel consumption. Thus, the tire can save both the environment and money. With the current fuel prices, a tire with a more economic rolling resistance can save nearly $500 over a driving distance of 50,000 miles. A wise choice of tires and a careful driving style also help to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions generated while driving.

Rolling resistance refers to the energy consumed in the deformation that takes place when the tire grips the road. This deformation, and the amount of energy it requires, can be regulated with structural and material choices in tire design. Examples of factors that increase energy consumption include the tire temperature, tire pressure, load index and tire wear, as well as air resistance and turbulence depending on the driving speed. Furthermore, a 0.5-millimeter water layer may increase rolling resistance by 50%.

Rolling resistance affects the environment throughout the tire’s useful life. Light rolling corresponds to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Rolling resistance is measured in terms of a rolling resistance coefficient: the greater the coefficient, the heavier the tire rolls. The average rolling resistance value for contemporary tires varies from 1 to 1.2.

Only 20–30% of the energy contained in fuel can be used to move a vehicle. This energy is used to accelerate and brake, but also to overcome rolling resistance and air resistance.

Purified Natural Oils Instead of Petroleum

Nokian Tyres is the world’s first tire manufacturer to have fully eliminated high-aromatic (HA) oils in its production. The purified oils used by Nokian Tyres contain less polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than required in the pertinent EU directive.

HA oils are the by-products of oil refining. The tire industry began using them in tire production in the 1950s. The oils, used as plasticising agents in the production of treads, facilitated the mixing of different raw materials and the refining of rubber compounds.

HA oils are classified as carcinogens because they contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

In tire production, HA oils can be replaced with non-labelled oils, that is, low-aromatic (LA) oils, which contain less than three per cent of PAH compounds. Studies show that this content of PAH compounds is low enough to render them harmless.

Clean, low-aromatic oils are produced by extraction from high-aromatic oils. This procedure removes nearly all PAHs from oil, converting them into low-aromatic compounds.

National Tire Safety Week: June 5th-June 11th, 2011

Hot summer weather and long trips for vacation, to the beach or to visit family means that your tires are getting a run for their money, are your tires up to the challenge?

Check your tires before your big trip or before venturing around town for the following:

Proper inflation
Wear
Damage

According to ConsumerReports.com, from 2005-2009 nearly 3,400 people die in a tire-related crash and another 116,000 people were injured. Many tire-related crashes could have been prevented through periodic tire checks, especially just before long trips in sweltering conditions. Tires are susceptible to heat stress, which can cause rupturing easily, especially when not properly inflated.

Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe this summer:

1. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. To find the proper inflation, look in the door jamb on the driver's side, in the glove compartment or on the fuel-filler door. If you struggle finding the inflation air pressure recommendations, contact your local dealership for help. Plus, proper inflation can benefit your wallet by allowing for better gas mileage.

2. Check your tire for damage. Look over your tires and replace them if you see cracks, cuts or bulges. Also, if you see objects lodged in your tire, like nails or screw, replace the tire. Replacing the tire will cost less in the long run than running the risk of a potential blow out in a construction zone on a major interstate.

3. Check the tread wear on your tire. If the tread is uneven or excessive, consider replacing your time. Place a quarter upside down in a tire grove, with good ole' George's head sticking out to the tire. The distance from George Washington's hairline is about 1/8 inch, so if you see all of his head, consider replacing the tire. Another trick is to use a penny, because a 1/16 inch cap exists between the edge of the penny and Abraham Lincoln's hairline. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, after putting it into a grove, you certainly need new tires.

4. Examine the sidewall of your tire. Many manufacturers state how long a tire should be on a car regardless of wear. If your tire is between 6 and 10 years, you should replace them. Your owner's manual can tell you in more detail the lifetime of your specific set of tires or vehicle.
